Christmas!
Christmas is a time of year that fills many people with excitement. Spending time with friends and family, giving and receiving gifts, eating loads and genuinely being merry.
While Christmas is a time of goodwill and making memories, it can also be a hard time of year for many. For some Christmas can bring feelings of loneliness and sadness, reflecting the challenges they may be facing in their lives.
A 2023 YouGov survey states ‘Over 50% of problem gamblers said they were more likely to feel anxious or depressed at Christmas’. During Christmas this time of year can feel quieter, with fewer responsibilities and less work to occupy time, this can make the temptation to gamble increase.
Whether it's at the bookies or online gambling sites, there's a fine line between enjoyment and excess during the holidays. It can be mentioned that there is often added pressure on individuals to have a good Christmas and provide presents. This could mean that the need to provide for a family is a lot greater leading to higher risks being taken with gambling. ‘44% (of gamblers UK) said they had spent money intended for Christmas presents on gambling (YouGov 2023).’ Circumstances like this can have detrimental impacts on the relationships individuals have with friends and family. If these situations sound familiar to you, it is important to remember that you are not alone.
The Primary Care Gambling Service aims to reduce gambling harms and hopefully increase an individual's mental health and well-being, especially during this festive period. Treatment that we can offer to patients can vary, depending on the individuals’ circumstances. These can consist of one-on-one therapy, case management, therapist-led online groups and care plans implemented with the GP. These treatment plans created by the Primary Care Gambling Service support the initial steps toward recovering from gambling-related harm.
While Christmas is a time of celebration it is important to reflect on the negatives of gambling harm. The marketing of quick wins and deals during Christmas time can quickly spiral into negative consequences if not checked up on.
The Primary Care Gambling Service wishes you a Merry Christmas!
